Grower Resources for Life After a Frost Event and Vine Replacement Strategies

Please join us at 6:00pm on May 18 for an in-person meeting and discussion on local resources available for El Dorado County grape growers. The presentation addresses frost with the information also relevant for vineyard recovery after fire damage.

We are pleased to announce that Tia Russell of Duarte Nursery will be joining Cecilia Osorio, Los Rios Community College's Biology Adjunct Assistant Professor. Both will bring their respective knowledge and experience when dealing with vine and bud damage and vineyard recovery.

Tia Russell of Duarte Nursery will address frost/freeze damage in young vines and what to consider when replanting. Duarte Nursery has years of experience in growing vines under Sierra Foothill conditions. Tia provides experience and practical knowledge of fruit science and clonal selections to help growers determine the best path for a successful restoration.

Cecilia Osorio’s presentation is titled: Life After a Frost Event. This biology-focused discussion will cover topics such as: Anatomy of the compound bud, a brief review; Why should you not cut the dead stuff yet?; Reestablishing positions after frost events; The role of carbohydrate storage and next year's bud burst; The balance between photosynthesis maximization and avoiding fungi prone microclimates; and, Should I fertilize more this year?

Cecilia will also provide an update on the Folsom Lake College Viticulture and Enology Program's relevant topics and benefits for growers.

There is no charge to attend. Check-in and social time begin at 6pm followed by announcements and the discussion. This is a great opportunity to ask about your specific vine, bud and replanting questions. We welcome growers and guests to bring a bottle of wine to share. We hope to see you there!
